Introduction
This town was
built by Mt Newman Mining Co. for employees involved in the extraction of
iron ore. Mt Newman ships its ore from Port Hedland; a 426-km railway
connect the towns. In 1981 responsibility for the town was handed over to
the local shire.
approximately 1188 kilometres N of Perth, the capital city of Western
Australia, Newman is surrounded by ancient eroded hills of the Ophthalmia
Ranges, waterholes and home of the largest single cut iron mine in the
world.
Newman is a modern town, now considered as a tourist attraction.
