ESPERANCE

Introduction

Approximately 721km SE of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, Esperance is a beautiful regional township of approximately 9,000 people nestled on the shores of Esperance Bay. A necklace of several hundred islands comprising the Recherche Archipelago adorns the coast of this most beautiful region of Australia. As a consequence, Esperance is known as The Bay Of Isles. Visitors to Esperance from around the world are charmed by its friendly people, delightful lifestyle and ideal year round climate.

Attractions

  • Esperance Municipal Museum A wonderful display of artifacts and memorabilia housed in the old goods shed and office, which was built in the early 1900s.

  • Archipelago of the Recherche The Bay of Isles is the common name for this - one of Australia's most beautiful seascapes. The wide sweep of the bay with shining white sand edging the turquoise water of the shallows, and the Myriad islands scattered carelessly here and there, provide an unforgettable sight.

  • Cape Arid National Park The park has magnificent coastal scenery, granite outcrops, swampy clay flats, several ruins and small mounts providing superb lookouts.

  • Cape Le Grand National Park Undulating sand plains, rich in coastal heath lay around massive granite and gneiss outcrops (Mount Le Grand the highest at three hundred and fifty three metres). Dispersed throughout are small freshwater pools and swamps. The coastal scenery is most spectacular with rock outcrops, magnificent white sand, blue water and many islands.

  • Stokes National Park Stokes National Park covers an area of 10667.5 hectares, excluding 16.19 hectares for preservation of a historic homestead - Moir Homestead.

  • Dempster Homestead Home of the most famous of Esperance's pioneer families. The house is not open to the public, but can be viewed from the road. The first shelter for the family was a Wattle and daub hut, but shortly afterwards the homestead was built as it stands today.

  • Pink Lake This lake is pink and sometimes even purple, depending on weather conditions. The colour of Pink Lake is attributed to high concentrations of salt tolerant algae, dunalella salina.

  • Tommy Windich's Grave Situated in the Port Authority Park is the grave of John Forrest's Aboriginal tracker and faithful friend who accompanied him on four expeditions. The original headstone is in the safe keeping of the local museum.

Activities

  • Twilight Bay Only minutes from the Esperance town site is this pretty bay, where the fishing's good and it's safe to swim. This is Esperance's best known bay. Picnic Cove is a curved, sheltered spot, slightly further along the bay.
