GEELONG
Introduction
Geelong, is the major
gateway to the Bellerine Peninsula's delights and further attractions of
the Great Ocean Road.
The name ‘Geelong’ is derived from the Aboriginal word for bay,
Jillong which means ‘a place of the sea bird over the white cliffs’.
Aptly named, Geelong is surrounded by water from its vibrant Corio Bay to
the rugged ocean coastline and the Barwon River flowing through its
suburbs.
Geelong has a proud history dating back to 1802 when explorer Mathew
Flinders climbed to the top of the You Yangs and surveyed the surrounding
fertile plains. There is also a fascinating theory that Portuguese
explorers visited the area hundreds of years earlier — a monument
supporting this theory can be found near Limeburners Point. Aboriginal
history in the region tells us that various clans of the Wathaurong tribe
camped around the region.
