BATHURST

Introduction
The
City of Bathurst is the oldest inland settlement in Australia, having been
founded in 1815. At first, the centre of pastoral industries, discoveries
of payable gold to the north-west in 1851, changed the focus and character
of the town.
The fine architecture apparent in the city emanates from the
period following the gold rushes, the centrally located Court House is the
finest of the public buildings. It is now occupied by the NSW
Conservatorium of Music, the Tourist Information Centre, and the
Historical Museum, which displays artifacts and relics pertaining to the
colourful past.
Mount Panorama dominates the city, and a drive around the
famous racing circuit is a must for visitors. At the entrance is the Mount
Panorama Hall of Fame which graphically portrays the history of motor
racing since its inception in 1938. The Bathurst 1000 race is held on the
long weekend at the beginning of October each year. Karingal Village and
the Bathurst Gold Diggings, located at the top of Conrod Straight, give an
authentic insight into mining conditions in the 1850's. At the summit of
Mt. Panorama is Sir Joseph Banks Nature Park, an area for free-range birds
and animals with extensive walking trails for sight-seers.
There is a wide
selection of accommodation, and numerous eating houses to enhance your
stay in this beautiful and historic city.
